Samsung to create 30,000 jobs for youth over the next 2 years

Samsung Group has announced a comprehensive youth employment plan which will provide jobs and training opportunities for 30,000 youths over the next two years.

Samsung has created an internship program called ‘Stepping Stone for Employment.’ Through the program, Samsung will choose 3,000 applicants who are looking for jobs with its subcontractors and offer positions as trainees for 3 months. The subcontractors will then provide 3 month internships and hire the interns.

The Group will pay 1.5 million KRW (1,270 USD) in monthly wages for each intern during the training and internship period. These interns will then be given an opportunity to apply for positions at Samsung’s affiliates after working for the subcontractors for at least 4 years.

Samsung’s affiliates are planning to participate in the job fair for Samsung subcontractors. This annual job fair has seen participation mostly by electronics companies such as Samsung Electronics, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung SDI, etc., but the group is planning to include Samsung C&T, Samsung Heavy Industries, the Hotel Shilla, and others. Through the fair, small- and medium-sized subcontractors have the chance to find and hire qualified job seekers, while job seekers have the chance for a job in these emerging companies. Samsung has been holding the fair since 2012.

Samsung is also tackling skill mismatch through education. The Group will establish more specialized departments in Meister high schools and universities with which it has cooperative arrangements. Samsung will hire 1,600 students after they are trained at one of these schools. Through academic-industrial cooperation programs at 29 universities and 9 specialized colleges, Samsung has been training talented individuals in the fields of software, hardware, molding, plant, retail business, and environmental safety, etc. The group has also been training students at 26 Meister high schools across the nation, such as Suwon Hi-tech High School, Dongah Meister High School, Gumi Electronic Technical High School, and Wonju Medical High School, etc.

The Group has also decided to expand its software engineering program for 6,400 non-software engineering students at 30 universities and 20 colleges. Of particular note is that 400 students will be chosen for the program from 5 universities in the Daegu/North Gyeongsang Province area. The group will support the students to take the engineering program and become software engineers.

Samsung Group will also provide business start-up programs to 5,000 people over the next 2 years in cooperation with 30 universities in the same area.

Four thousand youths will be hired for the finance sector as interns, insurance planners, and fund investment solicitors etc. In addition, 10,000 new jobs will be created by 2017 through investment in a semiconductor factory in Pyeongtaek, the Hotel Shilla Duty Free, Shilla Stay, new Samsung Biologics plants, and new hotels around Everland resort.
